What is ISO?

ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization and was founded in the year 1947 in Geneva, Switzerland where it is still based out of today. Interestingly, “ISO” is not an acronym derived from the full name. It comes from the Greek word “isos,” meaning “equal,” reflecting the organization’s goal of creating consistent, standardized systems across countries and industries.

The intent of ISO standards is to create a structured framework that helps organizations consistently deliver quality, manage risk, and continuously improve their processes. Achieving ISO certification transforms daily operations by formalizing workflows, requiring clear documentation, and enforcing accountability across teams. Employees follow defined procedures, track performance metrics, and address issues through corrective actions rather than ad hoc fixes. This leads to more consistent outputs, better traceability, improved efficiency, and a culture focused on quality and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
